Fans fight in brutal bar brawl in shocking video after Sunderland vs Newcastle derby
WARNING, DISTRESSING FOOTAGE: The wild brawl shows around 15 people punching and scrapping with chairs and tables thrown as women and children scream following Sunderland's victory over Newcastle
Shocking video footage has emerged showing a massive brawl breaking out in a packed venue after Sunderland's victory over Newcastle.
The bitter rivals faced off in a top-flight encounter for the first time in nearly a decade in an explosive Tyne-Wear derby. A comical own goal by Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade handed Sunderland the victory at the Stadium of Light, triggering wild celebrations among the home fans.
However, distressing scenes unfolded at a location where the game was being shown. The trouble kicked off just after the final whistle, with videos spreading rapidly on social media showing around 15 people involved in a violent clash. The screams of women and children can be heard as the situation escalates.
One person is seen falling over furniture and hitting the floor as chairs are thrown through the air. A female fan dressed in Newcastle colours is then spotted scrambling away on all fours as a crowd surges towards her.
The same person grabs a table and hurls it at two men wearing tracksuits. Punches are then thrown as more furniture flies across the room, reports Chronicle Live.
The chaos eventually died down. Some patrons left the establishment while others moved to a safer area, but the frightened cries of children could still be heard throughout.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said yesterday: "Just after 4pm yesterday (Sunday), we were called to a premises on Stone Cellar Road in Washington in response to a report of a disturbance. It was reported a number of people were fighting inside.
"Upon officer arrival, many of those believed to have been involved had left the area. Enquiries into the report are ongoing to identify anyone involved in the altercation.
"Anyone with information is asked to get in touch by sending us a direct message on social media, or by using the live chat or 'report' form function on our website. Those who can't contact us online, should call 101. Please quote reference number: 144619S/25."
The trouble contrasted sharply with the jubilant scenes at Sunderland's ground, where the Black Cats kept their remarkable unbeaten run against Newcastle intact - now extending to 10 games. The match was a bruising affair, with crunching challenges dominating over genuine goalscoring chances.
"Proud and happy," Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris told Sky Sports. "It was a derby and we were expected [to win] by our fans. This win is well deserved, we were mature and the lads were incredible.
"We knew before it was a special game but we have to reset quickly as we have another tough challenge in Brighton in one week so let's go again."
Meanwhile, Newcastle's gaffer Eddie Howe expressed disappointment over his squad's performance, admitting: "It's a horrible feeling, it's very painful. It was not our finest game.
"It's so disappointing, we know our performance was not what it needed to be. But, no, I don't think it will define our season. Nothing is lost today.
"It was a match of very few opportunities settled by a freak goal and we couldn't create the openings we wanted. The effort was there but the quality wasn't.
"We were disappointed with our creative output. We haven't delivered. It's difficult to take."
