Alexander Isak learns truth of Newcastle to Liverpool transfer after one night at Anfield
"Newcastle United's St James' Park is a footballing hotbed, but it will now feel lukewarm compared to the one Alexander Isak has chosen with Liverpool at Anfield"
Jeremy joined the Daily Star in 2010 as Manchester football correspondent and for more than a decade has served as our Chief Sports Writer. He provides expert coverage on Manchester United and Manchester City, the Premier League as a whole, and the England football team. Jeremy has covered football, rugby and cricket World Cups, as well as Wimbledon, the golf majors and the Olympics.
It hasn't taken long for Alexander Isak to appreciate the standards he needs to achieve at his new home. One game, in fact.
Isak was sat on the bench looking on, when Liverpool provided the latest chapter of a European adventure stretching back decades. Another late and famous win, to add to the long and proud history of a club which will always judge itself on the highest stage possible.
Winning the European Cup, or Champions League as it is now known, is considered the true measure of greatness in the red half of Merseyside. And so it should be. No English club has won more of them than Liverpool have (six).
And considering Isak cost Liverpool a British record £125m, he will be expected to go on and add more glories to the club's current roll of honour.
When Virgil Van Dijk rose above the Atletico Madrid defence to head home a stoppage time winner and seal a 3-2 triumph, Anfield was rocking again.
The sensation is nothing new to supporters, but it was to Isak. He had been substituted off, having completed less than an hour of his debut.
Which meant he had a front row seat to witness Atletico manager Diego Simeone reduced to an uncontrollable ball of anger and emotion at the final whistle.
But Isak will learn that, on European nights in particular, this is what Anfield does to those who go there looking to upset the script.
It even happened to the great Lionel Messi back in 2019, when the Argentine icon was reduced to mush, as Liverpool produced a quite astonishing 4-0 win to surge into the Champions League final at Barcelona's expense.
There is no place quite like Anfield during occasions like these. It will be one of the reasons Isak was so desperate to join Liverpool in the first place.
So desperate, in fact, he was willing to go on strike at Newcastle to force through the move. Now he has his wish - and a taste of what will be expected of him.
St James' Park is a footballing hotbed, but it will now feel lukewarm compared to the one he's chosen on Merseyside. With a huge price comes huge pressure - and Isak has no option but to deliver on a regular basis.
